01

Why we offer this service

Weight management has been getting a lot of attention recently. We've thought carefully about whether to offer it, and how.

We do, because our prescribing team can provide what a serious clinical weight management service requires: an in-person assessment, monthly follow-ups, GP communication, and the time to do the conversation properly. That's harder to get online or from a chain.

We treat weight management as a clinical service, not a retail one. If that matches what you're looking for, we'd be glad to help.

02

Who this service is for

Suitable for

  • Adults aged 18 and over
  • BMI of 30 or above, OR BMI of 27.5 or above with a related health condition (such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnoea)
  • Willing and able to attend monthly follow-up appointments
  • Willing to allow communication between the pharmacy and your GP
  • Comfortable sharing a complete health and medication history

Not suitable for

  • × Anyone under 18
  • × Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy
  • × Anyone with a current OR previous eating disorder
  • × Anyone unable to commit to monthly in-person follow-ups
  • × Specific clinical exclusions, assessed at consultation

Eligibility is confirmed at your initial consultation. We won't proceed if we don't believe the service is right for you, and the consultation fee covers the assessment whether or not you proceed further.

03

What makes this service different

Always in person at first

Your initial consultation is always face-to-face in our consultation room. Some services in this area run entirely online — we don't think that's appropriate for weight management. The first appointment needs the room.

The same team, every month

Monthly follow-ups with one of our three independent prescribers. Continuity matters in clinical care; we'll do our best to make sure you see the same prescriber each time.

GP communication is required

We communicate with your GP throughout — at initial assessment, and at key points during follow-up. This isn't optional. It's part of how we keep care joined up, and it's a meaningful clinical safeguard.

No subscription, no lock-in

You pay per consultation. If at any point the service isn't right for you, we'll say so. No multi-month bundles, no auto-renewals.

04

What happens at your appointments

01

Before your first appointment

A pre-appointment questionnaire — clinical history, current medications, GP details. So your time in the room is spent on what matters.

02

Initial consultation (45 minutes)

BMI, blood pressure and a careful clinical conversation. We discuss your history, your goals, and what realistic support could look like. The prescribing pharmacist assesses whether the service is appropriate for you, and if so, discusses all clinically appropriate options.

03

GP communication

We write to your GP after your initial consultation to share the clinical plan. We continue to communicate with your GP at key points during follow-up.

04

Monthly follow-ups (30 minutes each)

Every four weeks while you are on treatment. Initial follow-ups are in person; later ones can be by phone or video where appropriate. We review progress, weight and blood pressure, and adjust the plan as needed.

05

What this service won't do

We're honest about the limits of the service, and the limits of pharmacy weight management generally.

We don't prescribe without seeing you in person

Every patient on this service has an in-person assessment first. We don't run questionnaire-only prescribing routes. If you're looking for online-only prescribing without an appointment, this isn't the right service.

We don't promise outcomes

Weight management is individual. We give you our honest clinical judgement at every appointment, not promises. Sometimes the right answer is that the service isn't suitable for you — and we'll say so.

We don't skip the follow-up

Monthly follow-ups are part of the service, not optional. If you can't commit to monthly appointments, this isn't the right route.

We don't push a particular option

Sometimes the clinically right answer is lifestyle support, sometimes it's NHS referral, sometimes it's no intervention at all. We don't have a commercial interest in one outcome over another.

Pricing

Service Price
Initial consultation (45 minutes, in person) £80
Follow-up consultation (30 minutes) £45
Prescription cost (if appropriate) Separate

Prescription medication is not included in the consultation fee. If the prescribing pharmacist clinically agrees that medication is appropriate for you, you'll be charged separately for the prescription — both the medicine cost and the standard private prescription dispensing fee. We'll always be clear about cost before issuing any prescription.

The consultation fee covers the clinical assessment regardless of outcome. If we conclude that the service isn't right for you, or that no prescription is appropriate, the consultation fee still applies.

07

Book your initial consultation

Bookings for the initial consultation are made through our online booking system. You'll pay the £80 initial consultation fee at the time of booking; this secures your appointment and is fully refundable up to 24 hours before.

Before your appointment, we'll send you a secure clinical questionnaire. Please complete it at least 24 hours before — it lets us spend the appointment on you, not on paperwork.

Bookings are processed by SimplyBook.me on behalf of Muirend Pharmacy. Your data is stored on EU servers and protected by our privacy notice.

Common questions

Will I be prescribed medication at my first appointment?
Not automatically. The first appointment is a clinical assessment. If, after that assessment, the prescribing pharmacist concludes that medication is one of the clinically appropriate options for you, that's a conversation you'll have together in the room — not a decision made automatically.
Why don't you name specific medicines on this page?
Prescription-only medicines can't be promoted to the public — that's UK regulation, not Muirend policy. Any conversation about specific medicines happens privately, between you and the prescriber, where it belongs.
Why do you require communication with my GP?
Three reasons. First, your GP holds your complete health record — we want to make decisions with the full picture. Second, weight management involves changes that can affect your other medications and conditions. Third, joined-up care is safer than fragmented care. We treat this as a clinical service, not a retail one, and GP communication is part of what makes it clinical.
Is this service confidential?
Yes. Your consultation is private; your records stay with the pharmacy team. The mandatory GP communication is exactly that — communication with your registered GP, not with anyone else. We won't share your information with employers, insurers, or family members without your explicit consent.
Can I get this on the NHS instead?
Possibly. NHS routes for weight management exist and may be appropriate for you. If we believe the NHS route would serve you better — for example, NHS bariatric services — we'll say so during your consultation, and we'll help you understand how to access them. The consultation fee covers honest advice, including advice that this isn't the right route for you.
What if the service isn't right for me?
We'll say so during the consultation, explain why, and recommend an appropriate next step — which might be your GP, an NHS service, or something else entirely. The consultation fee covers the clinical assessment regardless of outcome.
I've been on a weight management service elsewhere — can I transfer?
Yes, in principle, but we'd treat it as a new initial consultation — there's no shortcut through the assessment. Bring any records or correspondence from your previous service to the appointment.
