Why blood pressure matters

High blood pressure (hypertension) is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease, stroke and kidney problems in the UK — and most people with it have no symptoms at all.

Regular checks are the only way to know. NHS guidance recommends that adults over 40 have their blood pressure checked at least every 5 years, and more frequently if previous readings have been elevated.

Advice given

Your result is explained clearly. If your reading is elevated, we advise on next steps and when to see your GP.

If you have symptoms of very high blood pressure

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if you have a sudden severe headache, chest pain, blurred vision, difficulty breathing, or feel suddenly very unwell. Do not wait for a pharmacy check — these may be signs of a hypertensive emergency.
