Common questions
- Do I need a diagnosis from my GP first?
- Not necessarily. If you have a confirmed diagnosis and previous injections, we can continue your care. If you haven't been diagnosed, we'll carry out a brief clinical assessment. If assessment doesn't support the use of B12 injection, we'll refer you to your GP for a blood test — we won't proceed without clinical justification.
- How often should I have B12 injections?
- This varies by individual and the reason for treatment. Your pharmacist will advise on a clinically appropriate schedule based on your history. We won't set a frequency without an assessment.
- Can you diagnose B12 deficiency?
- No. Diagnosing B12 deficiency requires a blood test, which is carried out by your GP or a laboratory. We can administer injections where deficiency has been diagnosed or where our assessment supports it — but we are not a diagnostic service.
- Are there any side effects?
- Side effects are uncommon. Some people experience mild pain or redness at the injection site. Serious reactions are rare. Our pharmacist will monitor you briefly after the injection.
- What if I want B12 for tiredness without a diagnosis?
- Persistent fatigue has many possible causes, most of which are not B12 deficiency. If you haven't been tested, the right first step is a conversation with your GP, who can organise a blood test and rule out other causes. We won't administer B12 injections purely for wellness or energy purposes — that's not what this service is.
If you feel unwell after your injection
Serious reactions to B12 injections are rare. If you experience difficulty breathing, swelling, rapid heartbeat or dizziness after leaving the pharmacy — call 999. For any other concerns, call NHS 24 on 111 or contact your GP.
