When should I see a prescribing pharmacist?
Prescribing pharmacists have additional clinical qualifications that allow them to assess, diagnose and — where appropriate — prescribe treatment independently. At Muirend, all three of our pharmacists hold prescribing qualifications. This guide explains what that means and when it's the right first call.
What is a prescribing pharmacist?
A prescribing pharmacist is a qualified pharmacist who has completed further clinical training — usually a postgraduate qualification — and is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a pharmacist independent prescriber. This registration allows them to assess patients, reach a clinical diagnosis, and issue prescriptions where appropriate, independently of a GP. They work to the same professional standards as other prescribers.
How is a prescribing pharmacist different from a regular pharmacist?
All pharmacists are clinical experts in medicines and can provide assessment and advice across a wide range of health concerns. The key difference with an independent prescriber is the ability to diagnose conditions and prescribe treatment without needing a GP to issue the prescription.
At Muirend Pharmacy, all three of our pharmacists hold independent prescribing qualifications. This underpins the broader range of NHS and private services we're able to offer compared with many other pharmacies.
What is Pharmacy First Plus?
Pharmacy First Plus is an NHS service available at pharmacies with at least one independent prescribing pharmacist. It covers a specific list of conditions where the pharmacist can assess, diagnose and prescribe treatment — rather than simply referring you to your GP. It's an appointment-based service; you'll be seen in a private consultation room.
Conditions currently covered by Pharmacy First Plus include:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women aged 16 to 65
- Infected insect bites
- Impetigo
- Shingles
- Sinusitis
- Cellulitis
This service is free on the NHS, but requires a booked appointment rather than a walk-in.
What private services are available from a prescribing pharmacist?
Beyond NHS services, a prescribing pharmacist can offer private consultations for a range of conditions. At Muirend, this includes skin consultations (including acne), period delay, B12 injections, travel health consultations with prescriptions where needed, and private weight management consultations. Private appointments are bookable online. No GP referral is needed.
Do I still need to be registered with a GP?
Yes. A prescribing pharmacist is not a replacement for your GP. You should remain registered with a GP for ongoing care, complex or long-term conditions, hospital referrals, and emergencies. What a prescribing pharmacist offers is an additional, often faster access point for appropriate clinical presentations. If we assess you and feel a GP is better placed to help, we'll say so clearly.
How do I know if a prescribing pharmacist can help with my condition?
If you're unsure, call us or walk in and ask. We'll tell you honestly whether we're the right first step and what we can offer. For anything outside our current service range, we'll point you in the right direction without wasting your time.
