What happens at a travel clinic appointment?

A travel health consultation at Muirend is a private appointment with a prescribing pharmacist to assess your specific needs for the trip ahead. Most appointments last 20 to 30 minutes, and where vaccines are indicated, many can be administered on the same day.

What is a travel health consultation?

Before administering any travel vaccines, we carry out a consultation to understand your itinerary and your health. Every destination carries different risks — the vaccines appropriate for a two-week beach holiday differ significantly from those needed for a backpacking trip through rural areas.

The consultation allows us to understand your travel style, review your vaccination history, consider any health conditions or medications that might affect what's recommended, and advise on precautions beyond vaccination — such as food and water hygiene, insect bite prevention, and altitude acclimatisation where relevant.

What should I bring to my appointment?

It helps to bring the following:

  • Your planned destinations, including travel dates
  • Your vaccination records if you have them — the yellow booklet for older paper records, or a digital version
  • A list of your current medications
  • Any pre-consultation form we've sent you, completed in advance

If you've previously received travel vaccines for similar destinations, records of what you had and when are particularly useful.

What happens during the appointment?

The appointment follows a structured process. We begin by discussing your itinerary — where you're going, for how long, and what type of travel you're doing. We then review your vaccination history to see what you've had before and how recently. This is followed by a clinical assessment that considers your personal health and any contraindications to the vaccines being considered.

Once we have a full picture, we'll explain which vaccines are recommended and why, which — if any — are required for entry to your destination, and what to expect after each. You then decide what you'd like to proceed with. Where you choose to go ahead, most vaccines are administered at the same appointment.

We'll record everything and issue any required documentation — including a Yellow Fever certificate where applicable.

Which vaccines are available?

At Muirend Travel Clinic we offer Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Rabies (pre-exposure), Meningitis ACWY, and other vaccines depending on your destination. Malaria prevention advice and prescriptions are also available. For a current list with pricing, see the travel clinic page.

Muirend Pharmacy is an approved Yellow Fever vaccination centre, so we can issue the documentation required for entry to countries where Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory.

Will I need more than one appointment?

It depends on what vaccines you need. Some are single doses; others are courses given over several weeks or months. If you're travelling soon, an accelerated schedule may be available for certain vaccines — we'll advise you at your first appointment. Booking early gives you the most options.
