What happens at a blood pressure check?

A blood pressure check at Muirend Pharmacy is free, takes around ten minutes, and needs no GP referral. You can usually walk in and be seen the same day. This guide explains what's involved, what your numbers mean, and what happens next.

What is blood pressure, and why does it matter?

Blood pressure is the force your blood exerts on the walls of your blood vessels as your heart pumps. It's recorded as two numbers — systolic (the pressure when your heart beats) over diastolic (the pressure between beats) — and is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Consistently elevated blood pressure often has no noticeable symptoms, which is why it's sometimes described as a silent condition. Getting it checked regularly is one of the most straightforward steps you can take to stay aware of your cardiovascular health.

Who should get a blood pressure check?

Regular checks are particularly useful if you:

  • Are aged 40 or over
  • Have a family history of high blood pressure
  • Are pregnant or have had elevated blood pressure during a previous pregnancy
  • Have been told previously that your blood pressure was borderline or elevated
  • Have been prescribed blood pressure treatment and want to monitor your response
  • Have lifestyle risk factors such as a high-salt diet, low physical activity or high alcohol intake

There's no harm in asking for a check if you're simply curious about where your numbers sit.

What happens at the appointment?

The check takes place in our private consultation area. You'll be asked to sit quietly for a few minutes before the reading — activity just beforehand can temporarily elevate your blood pressure and give a misleading result.

The reading is taken using an automated monitor placed on your upper arm. We typically take two or three readings a few minutes apart to get a reliable average. The whole appointment takes around ten minutes.

We'll then explain what your numbers show, what range they fall into, and what — if anything — we recommend you do next.

What do the numbers mean?

Blood pressure is broadly categorised as:

  • Optimal: below 120/80 mmHg
  • Normal: up to around 130/85 mmHg
  • Elevated: above this range on repeated readings
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 140/90 mmHg or above, confirmed on more than one occasion

A single elevated reading doesn't necessarily mean you have hypertension — stress, caffeine, recent activity and other temporary factors can all raise blood pressure momentarily. If your reading is elevated, we'll usually recommend checking again at a separate appointment and discussing the pattern with your GP.

What happens after the check?

If your reading is in a healthy range, we'll let you know and suggest a timeframe for your next check. If your reading is elevated, we'll explain what this means in plain terms, recommend a follow-up reading, and advise you to speak with your GP if readings remain elevated over time.

We don't issue prescriptions for blood pressure treatment based on a single pharmacy reading. Our role is to assess, inform, and refer appropriately.

How often should I have my blood pressure checked?

This depends on your readings and your health profile. As a general guide: if your blood pressure is consistently healthy, checking every one to two years is reasonable. If readings have been elevated or borderline, more frequent checks are sensible — in line with what your GP has advised. If you're on blood pressure treatment, follow your GP's or prescribing pharmacist's recommendation.
